ACLU: California DMV Fails at Voter Registration; Lawsuit Possible

California DMV Can’t Keep Up With Voter Registration

Over twenty years ago, Congress enacted the Motor Voter Act which required state Department of Motor Vehicles to allow residents to register at their branches. Now, California’s ACLU claims the state’s DMV is falling behind and is warning of a lawsuit.

The group filed a complaint with Secretary of State Alex Padilla on behalf of four organizations: the League of Women Voters of California, the National Council of La Raza, California Common Cause and the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment.

The suit also is on behalf of three private residents.

Distracted Driving Signs Possibly to Come to Hammonton

Two families in Washington Township saw the culmination of months of work when their anti-distracted driving campaign signs were installed. The Kellenyi and Donato families, both grieving after the deaths of their respective children, Nikki Kellenyi and Toni Donato-Bolis, have been working to raise awareness of the dangers of driving while distracted. Thus, the erection of four signs stating “Stay Alive Don’t Text and Drive” is a landmark in their campaign to decrease the number of deaths caused by texting while driving. These signs were placed at a local high school and park with the idea that it would reach.

Lawyer Who Sued to Remove Bike Lane Is De Blasio Backer

The lawyer appealing a lawsuit to remove the Prospect Park West bike lane has held a fundraiser and donated the maximum allowable amount to Bill de Blasio's campaign for New York City mayor -- but a de Blasio campaign spokesman says the candidate for Mayor, if elected, won't remove the lane.

James Walden's name shows up on a list of fundraisers released by the de Blasio campaign "to demonstrate Bill de Blasio's personal commitment to transparency."

Why are red-light cameras needed?

Intersection crashes resulting from red-light running are a serious safety problem. Based on information from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 900 people are killed and over 200,000 injured in the United States each year by this driver behavior. About half of the deaths are pedestrians and occupants in other vehicles who are hit by the red light runners.

How do they work?

Sensors in the roadway are connected to the red light camera and the traffic light controller. The camera is activated only when a vehicle.
